Enriching Wikipedia with UN knowledge resources - helping people access, build and share reliable, multilingual, open content. We are doing this by:
- Working with the Wikipedia community of editors to share text, images and data from UNESCO and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to further the achievement of the SDGs, in respect of Wikipedia's policies relating to neutrality, verifiability and sources.
- Mapping topics missing from Wikipedia: by collating data related to SDG topics and working with the Wikipedia community to create the content.
- Helping other UN agencies share their knowledge and content on Wikipedia using the processes and documentation established with the expertise of Wikimedia Sweden and Wikimedia UK.
- Providing training and guidance to sustain and grow this project as a long-term collective effort.
Information dissemination / Promotion: To encourage existing and aspiring Wikipedia editors, as well as other UN agencies, to join the effort and draw on, share and re-use on Wikipedia the free multilingual knowledge content produced across the UN.
All regions of the world, across the 300+ languages represented in Wikipedia.
Wikipedia editors and aspiring editors, Wikimedia chapters, Wikimedians-in-Residence, other UN agencies and intergovernmental organizations.
Designing our collective future requires high-quality knowledge that is produced collaboratively, fairly and inclusively and can be accessed by all. This project brings together the best of the research and data produced by UN agencies together with the reach, accessibility and unique knowledge-sharing model of Wikipedia. It directly relates to the subthemes of empowering and connecting lives.
Producing quality knowledge has a cost, which is why much good content ends up behind paywalls and inaccessible to large segments of society. Sharing content on Wikipedia makes resources available and accessible to a much wider audience. Wikipedia uses an open license, meaning all content is available for everyone to use and build upon. By sharing resources under open access on Wikipedia, UN agencies are showing best practice and encouraging an open culture of sharing in the areas where it works.
UN agencies bring together expert knowledge and data from across the world, working collaboratively across multiple countries, languages, and areas of expertise to realize the Sustainable Development Goals. Wikipedia is one of the largest online communities, with over 100,000 regular contributors working together to educate people in 300+ languages. The "Wikiproject for a United Nations of knowledge" connects individuals and organizations from across the world in a joint effort to bring this knowledge to bear on the world's most pressing challenges.

Wikimedia has been collaborating with organizations in education, science, culture and many other areas for over 10 years. In 2015, UNESCO was the first UN agency to welcome a Wikimedian-in-Residence, creating a bridge between the Wikipedia community and the UN. Thanks to the use of open licences, content from many UN agencies can easily be added to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects to improve articles and provide a new audience to the work.
The Wikiproject United Nations was set up in 2016 to help all UN agencies share content and knowledge on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. FAO joined the effort in 2019 and is playing a lead role in establishing good practices and building capacity.
