"The proposed project aims to foster healthy diets and resilient communities in Genoa, Italy, and Kesennuma, Japan, through sustainable food systems rooted in fisheries, agriculture and cuisine and hospitality services.
Genoa's ""Genoa Model"" translates global sustainability messages into local actions, enhancing public health and sustainability awareness through robust partnerships among public institutions, stakeholders, and academia. Key developments include educational campaigns, sustainable agricultural practices and certification of typical products and services with geographical collective marks as “Genova Liguria Gourmet”. Challenges include coordinating diverse stakeholders, ensuring community engagement, and maintaining economic viability for sustainable practices.
Kesennuma's Recovery and Sustainable Fisherie build on the city's resilience post-2011 tsunami. The rich marine environment supports a prosperous fishing industry, but challenges include retaining young fishermen, addressing gender gaps, and aligning economic recovery with sustainability. Key initiatives focus on educational programs for youth, sustainable fishing practices, and innovative solutions to promote inclusivity and economic feasibility in the fishery sector.
Both cities leverage social gastronomy to integrate sustainable food systems, promoting joyous, healthy, prosperous communities. By addressing coordination, engagement, economic, and resource management challenges, and with the support of the FAO, which advocates healthy diets for all, Genoa and Kesennuma aim to set examples of sustainable development, ensuring a vibrant and sustainable food future."
Spaces/Opportunities: We hope to promote this information through the Expo Osaka - "The submission addresses critical challenges by promoting healthy diets, sustainable agriculture, fisheries, and cuisine and hospitality services, and community resilience in Genoa and Kesennuma. It educates communities about the benefits of sustainable healthy diets and local food systems, fostering informed choices that can reduce healthcare costs and improve public health outcomes. By supporting innovation in agriculture, fisheries and cuisine and hospitality services through technology adoption and startup incubation, the project enhances productivity while minimizing environmental impact, contributing to economic growth and job creation in both regions.
In Kesennuma, post-tsunami resilience efforts empower youth and women in fisheries and agriculture, ensuring continuity and economic stability in traditional industries. These initiatives promote environmental sustainability by mitigating overfishing and habitat degradation, preserving biodiversity and ecosystem health for future generations. Feasibility is supported by existing models like the ""Genoa Model"" and ongoing successes in Kesennuma, demonstrating tangible impacts through increased community engagement and improved resource management.
Collaboration with international organizations like the FAO enhances expertise and resources, ensuring effective implementation and scalability of the project's solutions. Positive outcomes include strengthened local economies, enhanced environmental resilience, and empowered communities, setting a precedent for sustainable development and societal resilience globally."
Global
We hope to expand among communities, countries, international organizations working on sustainable food systems. "Our proposal embodies sustainability by prioritizing practices that ensure environmental, economic, and social resilience in Genoa and Kesennuma. Through education on sustainable healthy diets and local food systems, we advocate for reduced carbon footprints and support for small-scale entrepreneurs, local farmers and fishers employing eco-friendly methods. Emphasizing sustainable healthy lifestyle, sustainable cuisine and hospitality services, sustainable agriculture and fisheries practices such as organic farming (for school lunch programme in Japan) and responsible fishing, we aim to preserve biodiversity and enhance ecosystem health, safeguarding natural resources for future generations.
Economically, our initiative promotes local economic resilience by fostering startups and job creation in sustainable food sectors. This approach not only supports economic growth but also aligns it with environmental stewardship, ensuring sustainable livelihoods. Socially, our efforts empower marginalized groups, particularly youth and women in Kesennuma’s fisheries and agriculture sectors and support small local and virtuous firms through sustainable restaurant service in Genoa guaranteed by the Chamber of Commerce, promoting inclusivity and community resilience.
Advocating for supportive policies at local and international levels further strengthens our sustainability framework. By securing subsidies for sustainable practices and advocating biodiversity protection, we create an enabling environment for lasting sustainability efforts.
Overall, our proposal integrates sustainability into every facet, aiming to create a future where communities thrive in harmony with their environments. It serves as a model for global replication, demonstrating how sustainable practices can foster resilient societies and a healthier planet."
